Introduction
Commercial art made me crave freedom. When I began to paint, I had that freedom and was astounded to find that I needed rules. Rules were hard to find. I went to workshops and read how-to books. I covered parts of famous paintings with my thumb to see what was important. I made rough thumbnail scribbles of paintings in galleries, and analyzed the patterns. I wrote everything in a scribbler, and the scribbler became this book. Sometimes we happen upon a perfect composition, but usually things need to be moved, added or subtracted, and I think of rules as tools. It is a joy to know that around a corner will be a new discovery.
Look at the pictures before you read this book. Words change what we see, and the pictures will not be the same after you have read it.
